API 5L Pipe Inspection & Test
Pipe Inspection & Test
HYSP as API 5L certified steel pipe factory will apply all necessary pipe inspection & test or any other required steel pipe specification tests. To ensure the quality and safety of HYSP’s mild welded steel pipes.
According to API 5L, there are usually those tests: UT, hydrostatic tester, tensile test, chemical analysis, hardness, flattening test, visual inspection, weighing & measurement, marking.
Pipe Inspection & Test (1) – UT
Before welding, coils must be done plate UT to make sure the coil or plate is in good quality and condition. But this plate UT is usually done by the raw material mills.
HYSP will inspect and make sure the raw material in top quality before making API 5L Line Pipe. Besides, we will have online UT for our round welded steel pipes. After hydro test, the off line UT will be done to confirm the online UT result. This double UT make sure our API 5L Line Pipe in great quality.
Pipe Inspection & Test (2) – Flattening Test
This test is done once cut from ‘online’ to check the mechanical properties of API 5L Line Pipe.
Acceptance criteria for flattening tests shall be as follows:
ERW Pipe in grades W L210 or A and LW pipe with D 323,9 mm (12.750 in):
1) For grades W L415 or X60 with t W 12,7 mm (0.500 in), there shall be no opening of the weld beforethe distance between the plates is less than 66 % of the original outside diameter. For all othercombinations of pipe grade and specified wall thickness, there shall be no opening of the weld beforethe distance between the plates is less than 50 % of the original outside diameter.
2) For pipe with a D/t 10, there shall be no cracks or breaks other than in the weld before the distance between the plates is less than 33 % of the original outside diameter.
Pipe Inspection & Test (3) – Hydrostatic Test or Leakage Test
A hydrostatic test is a test which measures the strength or structural integrity of pressurized API 5L line pipe that hold the water. API 5L line pipe is tested in a water system. The test ensures that there aren’t any leaks in the mild steel pipe and that it is structurally safe to operate.
Pipe Inspection & Test (4) – Mechanical Test & Chemical Analysis
Mechanical Test
HYSP will apply tensile test as per API 5L line pipe specification. With our universal tensile tester, we will have those parameter: yield strengh, tensile strength, elongation for both pipe body and welded seam.
Chemical Analysis
HYSP will analyze the raw material and finished pipes to check the chemical composition of your welded pipe if it is qualified according to API 5L or other given black steel pipe specification.
Pipe Inspection & Test (5) – Impact Test & DWT
Impact test and DWT for API 5L line pipes are to check the fracture toughness in different way.
Impact Test
This is the API 5L impact test requirement: Individual test values for any test piece shall be W 75 % of the required minimum average (of a set of three test pieces) absorbed energy values.
The minimum average (of a set of three test pieces) absorbed energy for each pipe body test shall be as given in Table 8, based upon full-size test pieces and a test temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) or, if agreed, a lower test temperature.
DWT
For each test (of a set of two test pieces), the average shear fracture area shall be W 85 %, based upon a test temperature of 0 °C (32 °F) or, if agreed, a lower test temperature. For wall thickness 25,4 mm (1.000 in), DWT test acceptance requirements shall be by agreement.
Besides the above tests, HYSP will check the hardness, dimensional parameter(diameter, wall thickness, length, weight of each single mild steel pipe), visual inspection of black steel pipe surface, bevel checking etc.
